OUR HISTORY

The Ruston District Sunday School Department has long served as a pillar of faith, education, and community engagement within the Ruston District. Its history is a testament to the dedication of visionary leaders who sought to build and sustain a strong foundation for biblical instruction and spiritual growth.

The department was originally established under the leadership of the late Superintendent Billy Caldwell and the late Mother Hattie Currie, who served as the Sunday School Superintendent and Field Representative, respectively. Their efforts were supported by the oversight of the late Superintendent H.B. Harris, whose guidance allowed the Sunday School to grow into an essential arm of the district’s ministry.

In 1980, Superintendent Caldwell further expanded the department’s reach by appointing Missionary Cigale Chaffers as the new Field Representative. Her appointment marked a new era of development, reinforcing the department’s mission of spreading biblical knowledge and ensuring the effective organization of Sunday School activities throughout the district.

As the leadership of the Ruston District evolved, so too did the Sunday School Department. Following the passing of Superintendent Harris, the late Superintendent Thomas Kennedy assumed leadership of the Ruston District. In 1982, under his administration, Elder Alphonse Lee was appointed as the Sunday School Superintendent, with Missionary Cigale Chaffers continuing in her role as Field Representative. This leadership duo remained in place for many years, fostering stability and spiritual enrichment within the Sunday School.

A significant transition occurred when Missionary Chaffers was elevated to the position of District Missionary. This prompted another shift in leadership, and in 2007, Elder Dwayne Lathan was appointed by Superintendent Kennedy as the new Sunday School Superintendent. At the same time, Deacon Jeffery Sims was brought on board as the Field Representative. Their leadership ensured that the Sunday School Department remained an integral part of the Ruston District’s spiritual education efforts.

Following the passing of Superintendent Kennedy, Elder Dwayne Lathan was appointed as the Superintendent of the Ruston District, leading to another important restructuring within the Sunday School Department. In 2024, Superintendent Lathan appointed Deacon Jeffery Sims as the new Sunday School Superintendent and Sister Juanita Delphine as the Field Representative.

Throughout its history, the Ruston District Sunday School Department has remained steadfast in its commitment to teaching and reinforcing Christian principles. Through the dedication of its superintendents, field representatives, and district leadership, the department continues to inspire and educate generations of believers. Its legacy is a reflection of faith, service, and unwavering dedication to the spiritual growth of the Ruston District community.
